Isaac Yellan

Evolutionary and computational biologist extraordinaire

van_gogh.jpg

A picture I took of Van Gogh's portrait at the Chicago Art Institute. Basically what I look like +/- an ear.

I am a recent PhD graduate from the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto. I am a member of the lab of Dr. Timothy R. Hughes, where I study the impact of selfish genetic elements on the evolution of genome regulation, particularly transcription factors.

My research has led me through the murky genomic waters of many a fish, particularly the majestic coelacanth, which led to some coverage of my work in some notable (and less than noble!) outlets.

More generally, I have extensive experience in studying molecular evolution and applying computational tools to understand comparative genomic evolution, and along the way gained expertise in integrating large, complex datasets and datatypes.
